Economic importance :
Beneficial insects because they feed on other insects .
since they are cannibalistic and also feed on other beneficial insects ,their value as biocontrol agents is probably rather limited.

Dermaptera: earwigs
Characteristics
Earwigs are a distinctive group of insects of small to medium size, ranging from 5 to 50 millimetres in length. Earwigs are sometimes confused with Staphylinid beetles, but can be distinguished from the latter by the presence of pincer-like cerci, which Staphylinid beetles lack. Earwigs are mostly dark coloured (brown to black) and can be recognised by the following features:
1) Flattened elongated body
2) Heavily sclerotised pincer-like cerci. Females have straight cerci with a inward pointing tip and males have curved cerci
3) 2 pairs of wings. The forewings are short and protectively hardened. The hind wings are membranous and folded in a fan-like way underneath the forewings when not in use. Some species are also wingless
4) Chewing (mandibulate) mouthparts
5) Moderately long antennae

*The labrum is emarginated
*All possess apair of exocrine glands inside the prothorax (in afew species , these glands can discharge an irritating , tear gas-like spray used for defense)
*The intestine has unique filament bearing glands
*Thorax fused with abdominal sternum I
*The dorso-ventral muscles of the abdomen are numerous , short ,& arranged in parallel
*Males of many species possess an unique sclerite termed the vomer ( this structure is located above the genitalia and permits the male to clasp the female

General characteristics of order Phasmatodea
As their name suggests these cryptic insects have the shape and colouring of the leaves and twigs of the plants they inhabit. Phasmids are distinctive insects and are often large to very large ranging in size from 30 to 300 millimetres in body length. Stick and leaf insects, when discovered will often drop to the ground and remain motionless rather than take flight. Some species will also shed legs when attacked, growing them back over time. Phasmids are distinguishable by the following features:
1) Body shape variable but most are elongate and cylindrical or flattened and resemble sticks, leaves or grass
2) 2 pairs of wings although some species are wingless
3) Wings when present consist of short, hardened forewings which form a protective cover over part of the larger membranous hind wings
4)Antennae are filiform and may be either short or long
5) Phasmid nymphs usually resemble adults but lack wings
